Frequently Asked Questions

How does Chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system. Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue. Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working right. Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine, called a subluxation, can interfere with this vital exchange by irritating nerves and compromising the function of affected organs and tissues.

What does a gentle adjustment mean?
Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a quick thrust that helps add motion to the spinal joints that aren't moving right. Some methods use the doctor's hands. In our office, we use the Pro-Adjustor, which uses technology developed by NASA to gently vibrate the joints back into normal motion without pain. Not only do our patients love this method because of its gentle effectiveness, they also love to refer their friends who were otherwise "too afraid" to try chiropractic.

How many adjustments will I need?
The number of adjustments varies with each patient and his or her individual health goals. Many patients sense progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits become less frequent as your spine stabilizes. In chronic cases, complete healing can take months or even years.

What should I expect on my first visit?
Your first visit to Brunke Chiropractic is a time for us to get to know you and for you to get to know our staff and the services we provide. Please plan to be with us for an hour and be sure to wear something comfortable that will allow you to move freely during your exam.

We'll start your appointment by asking you to complete a brief medical history that will help us better understand your complaint, health status and any concerns you may have about chiropractic care. We'll also ask you to let us know of any medications you're currently taking. In turn, our attentive staff will give you a tour of the office and share information about our policies.

After the paperwork, you'll meet with Dr. Brunke for a confidential conversation about your health. Dr. Brunke will review your medical history with you and ask more specific questions to determine if chiropractic care is right for you. During this consultation you are encouraged to ask any questions you may have about your ailment, our office or chiropractic care in general - we want you to have all the information you need to feel comfortable with our role in your health care.

If Dr. Brunke believes your condition will benefit from chiropractic treatment, you will have your initial exam. The chiropractic exam includes standard physical, orthopedic and neurological tests, and screenings for conditions that require referral to other healthcare providers. If necessary, X-rays or other diagnostic tests may also be ordered. Following the exam, Dr. Brunke will recommend an appropriate course of care. If no additional tests or referrals are required, your first treatment may be performed after review of your personalized program.

What is acupuncture?
The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Chi or Qi present in every living creature. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur. Acupuncture works to "re-program" and restore normal functions by stimulating certain points on the meridians in order to free up the Chi energy.
